What Is Air-Roasted Coffee?

Have you ever had coffee leave you with an unpleasant taste within your mouth, or one that just tastes burnt or bitter?

We usually attribute these characteristics to the extraction method used, a particular style of coffee roast or brand of coffee. These assumptions may be correct, yet,

Maybe it’s neither?

In many cases, it simply comes down to the roasting equipment utilized to roast the green coffee beans that may be causing these bitter flavours.

You might stumble onto this realization by having a cup of extraordinary coffee and you may ask what made it so, only to discover, Air-Roasted Coffee!

With Air Roasted Coffee, you taste the essence of the coffee bean as its the air that roasts the coffee not the surface of the roaster.

Air-Roasted coffee has a very clean taste that is intensely aromatic and smooth, minus the acids and bitter flavours that are sometimes produced by conventional roasters.

There is a growing trend towards roasting coffee using more convection heat (air), as opposed to conduction heat (the drum), giving the roasted coffee bean a more consistent, balanced roast profile, enhancing the natural flavour notes giving a smoother, tastier cup of coffee.

The original Air-Roasting method was championed by Michael Sivetz, Chemical Engineer and Coffee Industry Consultant. He wrote the first scientific book on coffee, Coffee Technology. Disappointed with the state of roasting manufacturing, he developed and manufactured the first practical commercial Air-Roaster: the Sivetz Fluid-Bed Roaster.

Most drum roasters today introduce hot air into their roast chamber, then the beans tumble and touch the hot surfaces to roast, like clothing in a clothes dryer. The Air-Roaster levitates the beans on a bed of hot air, keeping the beans moving and not burning on hot surfaces.

The Air-Motion Coffee Roaster has revolutionized Air-Roasting technology, offering the modern day coffee roaster the opportunity to Air-Roast their green coffee beans seamlessly and intuitively, together with the most cutting edge technology, to create the ultimate specialty blends for their customers.

Using highly responsive heating elements with fast-reacting thermocouples, controlling and keeping the rate-of-rise on track, one can stay true to one’s roast profile delivering the best coffee with flavour like no other.

The Air-Motion extraction system immediately removes dust, smoke and chaff from the roast chamber during the roast allowing the flavours of the coffee to come through and shine.

The sole use of hot air greatly increases the rate of heat transference to the beans, creating a cleaner, more aromatic roast, free of bitter tasting tars.

With less moving parts and a self-cleaning stainless steel open roast chamber, there is no downtime needed to do routine cleaning and maintenance on the Air-Motion Coffee Roaster providing a more reliable and efficient machine.
